How Innovative Radiology Practices Are Transforming Workflow Through Data Interoperability

Introduction

Radiology has always represented the leading edge of healthcare innovation. From multimillion-dollar imaging systems that visualize the human body in exquisite detail to advanced analytics that transform data into actionable insight, radiology departments have long stood at the forefront of digital transformation.

But in recent years, the rest of healthcare has accelerated its adoption of health IT, raising the bar for integration, interoperability, and data-driven performance. Radiology practices are now expected not just to deliver precise images—but to connect seamlessly within a broader ecosystem of value-based care.

At the center of this evolution is interoperability. Rhapsody, Corepoint, and Rhapsody Image Director customers are leading the way—streamlining workflows, enabling real-time insight, and transforming how radiology connects with referring providers, patients, and partners.

Great Lakes Medical Imaging (GLMI)

Building a unified, cloud-powered radiology ecosystem

Great Lakes Medical Imaging (GLMI), a leading diagnostic imaging provider in upstate New York, modernized its integration infrastructure by adopting the Rhapsody Integration Engine.

Prior to implementation, GLMI faced challenges with:

  • Fragmented workflows and manual message routing
  • Limited visibility into system performance
  • Downtime during partner system upgrades

By migrating to Rhapsody’s cloud-hosted architecture, GLMI consolidated its data ecosystem across modalities, PACS, and regional health networks.

Results:

  • Centralized dashboard for monitoring all integrations
  • Automated alerts for failed studies or delayed orders
  • Improved uptime and faster partner connectivity
  • Future-ready scalability for cloud-based growth

“With Rhapsody, we’ve built a foundation that’s flexible and sustainable,” said GLMI’s IT Director. “Our interoperability framework now scales as fast as our business.”

Automated Health Consulting

Real-time dashboards for intelligent workload management

Dennis Loucks, CEO of Automated Health Management Services coordinates more than 100 radiologists across multiple facilities. Seeking a better way to visualize and manage workloads, his team used Corepoint Integration Engine to create a business intelligence dashboard—comparing it to Waze for radiology.

“We started using Corepoint to populate SQL databases that feed real-time analytics for radiologist workload projections. With Corepoint feeding the data, I know the information is normalized and accurate. It’s our foundation for confident, data-driven operations.”

Using Corepoint to populate SQL databases, the team feeds real-time analytics on radiologist workload, turnaround time, and study volume into intuitive dashboards.

The result:

  • Immediate visibility into bottlenecks
  • Smarter scheduling and staffing
  • Data-driven workload projections

A good foundation for analytics starts with a consistent flow of information,” Loucks said. “With Corepoint feeding the data, we know it’s normalized and reliable—no matter the source.

Jefferson Radiology

Reducing errors through a Master Patient Index (EMPI)

Jefferson Radiology, serving multiple imaging centers and hospital partners throughout Connecticut, needed a way to unify patient data across disparate systems. Interface analyst Brian Whittle led the initiative to connect their systems to an Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) using Corepoint’s Web Services feature.

An EMPI maintains accurate, consistent demographic and medical data across all connected departments—ensuring every image and report links to the correct patient.

“Before implementation, we stress-tested everything to make sure it worked flawlessly,” said Whittle. “I’m not a programmer, but Corepoint made it possible for me to build and deploy interfaces quickly and accurately.”

Through the EMPI integration, Jefferson eliminated patient mismatches and redundant records, dramatically improving safety and efficiency. The solution also reduced the burden on IT resources, allowing the small team to focus on strategic projects rather than manual data reconciliation.

After implementing the EMPI integration with Corepoint:

  • Error Reduction: Duplicate and mismatched patient records dropped by more than 90%, improving both accuracy and confidence in radiology reporting.
  • Efficiency Gains: Automated patient matching reduced manual data corrections by hours per week, freeing IT and clinical staff for higher-value work.
  • Improved Continuity of Care: Physicians and radiologists gained a complete, unified view of each patient’s imaging history—enabling faster diagnoses and fewer repeat studies.
  • Streamlined Onboarding: New sites and imaging centers can now be connected to the EMPI in days, not weeks, accelerating Jefferson’s ability to scale.

“Corepoint gave us the confidence that every report, every image, and every patient ID would align perfectly,” Whittle said. “That kind of trust in your data is invaluable.”

Diversified Radiology

Create a unique teleradiology network

Diversified Radiology operates one of Colorado’s most advanced 24/7 teleradiology services, covering everything from neuro and pediatric to musculoskeletal imaging. To expand collaboration and efficiency, the team helped launch Strategic Radiology, a consortium of large radiology groups sharing data, expertise, and infrastructure.

The biggest barrier? Interface complexity between disparate systems. Using Corepoint Integration Engine, Diversified took full control of their interfaces, reducing reliance on external vendors.

“When customers change RIS systems, we can adapt instantly,” said David, an IT leader at Diversified. “With Corepoint, we eliminated long project delays and downtime.”

The team can now:

  • Make on-the-fly interface changes
  • Consolidate monitoring and maintenance
  • Rapidly integrate new Strategic Radiology members

“We’re constantly exploring what more we can do with the engine—how to make processes faster and smarter,” David added.

Central Illinois Radiological Associations (CIRA)

Extending interoperability to partners without EHRs or RIS

Not all referring partners are equipped with full digital infrastructure. CIRA solved this challenge by building a web-based order entry system powered by Corepoint’s Web Services capability.

Through a secure, password-protected web portal, referring providers can submit orders that Corepoint converts into HL7 messages and routes through CIRA’s standard workflow.

Specifics:

  • PHP web server generates SOAP requests
  • Corepoint parses SOAP input into HL7 orders
  • Orders automatically route to PS360, PACS, and other systems

This innovation allows CIRA to support film-based and hybrid sites, reducing manual entry and support calls while maintaining interoperability.

North State Radiology

Automating structured reporting from DICOM SR Data

Scott Adair of North State Radiology identified a bottleneck: radiologists were manually entering measurement data from DICOM images into PowerScribe 360. Using Corepoint Integration Engine, he developed a solution to parse DICOM Structured Report (SR) data and generate HL7 messages automatically.

“We can extract the structured data and feed it directly into dictation software,” said Adair. “It reduces data-entry errors and streamlines our entire reporting process.”

This innovation not only saves time but ensures measurements flow directly from the imaging modality to the final report—accurate, automated, and auditable.

“Structured reporting is the future,” Adair said. “Corepoint empowers us to grab data already in our network and use it to drive care, efficiency, and accuracy.”

Conclusion

Radiology continues to pioneer digital transformation in healthcare—but now, it’s not just about images. It’s about data fluidity, intelligent automation, and connected ecosystems that enable better care and business performance.

Rhapsody, Corepoint, and Rhapsody Image Director customers are showing what’s possible when radiology practices own their interoperability strategy—turning complex workflows into seamless, insight-driven operations that elevate both clinicians and patients.
