The customer

Axia Women’s Health

Axia Women’s Health is the largest privately owned women’s health group in the country, serving over 500,000 women throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. At its core, Axia Women’s Health is a community of 450+ providers across 150+ locations committed to providing a more caring, connected, and progressive healthcare experience for women. Axia connects its patients to a full spectrum of services including obstetrics, gynecology, fertility, maternal-fetal medicine, mammography, behavioral health, and laboratory services. In 2024, Axia was recognized as the #1 Physician Practice for Women’s Health in the United States by Castle Connolly and was certified as a Great Place To Work for the 3rd consecutive year.

The challenge

Simplifying an overly complex IT landscape — fast

No matter what, Axia must ensure the right data reach the right person when needed. However, since Axia manages a healthcare network, they must corral many solutions and datasets, even though all care centers are on the same electronic medical record (EMR). As new practices join Axia, they bring additional systems, data, and complexity.

By early 2024, Axia was managing three different integration solutions:

  • A homegrown solution built by a previous IT team
  • A solution that wasn’t designed for healthcare, up for renewal
  • Rhapsody Corepoint, used by Axia for over a decade

Axia’s CIO decided it was time to save costs and to simplify. Since the non-healthcare solution refused to allow a month-to-month extension while Axia decided the best path forward, Axia needed to move as quickly as possible.

Some potential vendors were hesitant about the tight timeline. Then, Axia’s Dan Safeer, systems architect, asked the Rhapsody team if an expanded Corepoint implementation could meet their needs — and do so in less than a month. The answer was a confident “yes.”

“Rhapsody offered a calming sense that this can be done. That they would work with us and guide us — and that we already had everything we needed,” Safeer said.

Indeed, rather than bringing in a new vendor or investing in additional solutions, Rhapsody helped Axia better connect what already existed — saving time, complexity, and money.

The solution

Rhapsody Corepoint and Rhapsody EMPI

Axia’s practices use eClinicalWorks as the electronic health record for many of their processes, but they also employ several other tools for messaging, secure video, patient forms, and more. Axia’s technology must manage both patient and employee records. That requires the technology to constantly synchronize employee records to ensure that providers access the right data, are placed into the correct secure video visit, and bill promptly.

Today, Rhapsody Corepoint enables Axia to link all their internal systems, keeping everything moving and in the proper lane, and expand care offerings with external partners. Corepoint also manages the Rhapsody EMPI conversation that deduplicates and merges patient records in the data warehouse, synchronizing identity management across systems so providers always access the most accurate, current patient data.

Axia had already been using Corepoint for HL7 messaging and used the transition as an opportunity to transfer all their API functionality into Corepoint. Enlisting Corepoint’s native API functionality further simplified the tech stack by removing the need for a separate API engine — saving $300,000 over the next three years.

“We didn’t know how easily Corepoint could make our API calls,” Safeer noted. “Now, Corepoint’s API allows our providers to do more within eClinicalWorks,” enabling a smoother experience for end users.

The results

A fast, flawless transition that ensures must-have healthcare functionality

Working closely with Rhapsody, Axia’s transition went fast — very fast. In less than 20 days, the teams methodically worked through an extensive checklist that integrated everything through Corepoint, simplifying the entire infrastructure.

Alongside the speed, the Rhapsody approach verified that each piece transitioned correctly. Safeer explained, “We would change one interface, then watch the traffic to confirm everything was right, and move on to the next one.”

At every step, the Axia team felt confident they would meet their tight deadline.

“Real-time data, log search, and data lineage are all must-haves in healthcare, and Corepoint delivers that with ease. With Rhapsody, we have a partner we trust to navigate whatever comes next. “

“With a project like this, you can’t assume anything,” Safeer said. “The Rhapsody team was great about answering our questions, no matter how elementary, to make sure we were on track and knew what was happening.”

Axia’s Corepoint integration now keeps everything running smoothly across every system, all through a single solution that saves money. The experience confirmed that Rhapsody supports Axia’s continued growth. As Safeer explained, “Real-time data, log search, and data lineage are all must-haves in healthcare, and Corepoint delivers that with ease. With Rhapsody, we have a partner we trust to navigate whatever comes next.”

Best of all, Safeer said he doesn’t have to think about the day-to-day integration. “We set it, and now it works and does its job,” he said. “We have not had to touch the new environment at all.”
