I don’t know about you, but it seems like just yesterday that we converted from ICD-9 to ICD-10. Why convert to ICD-11 already? What was missing from the previous version and what does it mean for my organization? While we feel like it’s only been a short while between versions, the International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision is the first to be developed and published in the last two decades. The ICD-11 revision evolved over a decade with input from over 300 specialists across 55 countries. It was truly a global effort and an impressive collaboration.
But why the changes? As our healthcare ecosystems, payment models, clinical expertise, and research evolve so should our classification and documentation methods. The ICD-11 revision improves the ease and accuracy of coding while requiring less training to effectively utilize the code set. Provide more value with less effort. And, for the first time, ICD-11 is also catering to the digital healthcare world by offering the content for use online or offline while using free “container” software. Welcome to modern healthcare!
What is ICD-11?
International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision (ICD-11) is the most recent revision of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Classification of Diseases and was accepted by WHO’s World Health Assembly (WHA) on May 25, 2019, effective beginning January 2022.
ICD-11 provides a common language that allows health professionals the ability to share standardized information around the world. One of the main uses of ICD-11 includes recording, reporting, and analysis of mortality and morbidity data.
A key feature of the revised system is that it provides a simple coding structure that makes it easier to record various conditions with specificity. The most wildly used subset of the entire ICD-11 catalogue is the ICD-11 for Mortality and Morbidity Statistics (ICD-11-MMS).
What’s new in ICD-11?
There is a larger list of changes to ICD-10, but here are some of the highlights:
Coding structure change: The coding structure has changed in ICD-11. A key feature of the revised system is that it provides a simple coding structure that makes it easier to record various conditions with specificity.
Post-coordination: ICD-11 now supports post-coordination or code clustering and allows for even more specificity. Pro tip: Post-coordination is using codes in combination with other codes to increase the specificity. Pre-coordination is the combing of elements in anticipation of a search for expanded elements and is included in ICD-11 codes.
Expanded chapters: ICD-11 has expanded from 21 chapters to 26 chapters. Five new chapters include:
Chapter 03: Diseases of the blood or blood-forming organs
Chapter 04: Disorders of the immune system (conditions affecting the immune system and conditions affecting the blood are now in two separate chapters)
Chapter 07: Sleep-Wake disorders
Chapter 17: Conditions related to sexual health
Chapter 27: Traditional Medicine
Chapter change: Chapter 21 (Symptoms, signs or clinical findings, not elsewhere classified) has been introduced to add detail as an alternative to the dagger asterisk system in ICD-10. This is designed to be used with post-coordination in mind.
Digital: ICD-11 is a fully digital solution with an API and supports local hosting of both the browser and the API.
How does Rhapsody Semantic incorporate ICD-11?
Rhapsody has converted ICD-11 into the Semantic content format. This provides the ability to browse, map, create subsets, and integrate using APIs and FHIR endpoints while leveraging the knowledge and architecture of Semantic. In short, it means that Rhapsody Semantic fully supports ICD-11 out of the box.
The Semantic browser can display the taxonomy and the property types preferred term, inclusions, fully specified name, and post-coordination references and follows the ICD-11 Mortality and Morbidity Statistics (MMS) browser.
Many features of ICD-11 align with the existing structure of Semantic, including multi-lingual support. All English language and translated values for ICD-11 concepts can be browsed in Semantic at a single access point. Alongside the ICD-11 code systems, Semantic also supports the ICD-10 to ICD-11 mappings to ease the transition.
