HL7 recently announced it has published release 4 (R4) of the HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard. HL7 FHIR® is an emerging standard that combines the best features from HL7 V2, HL7 V3, and HL7 CDA, while leveraging the latest web service technologies.

The design of HL7 FHIR is based on RESTful web services and utilizes modular components called resources. The first original proposal of HL7 FHIR was made in 2011, and it’s been a long road to get to R4. There has been much anticipation surrounding the strong focus to make implementation simpler compared to former HL7 standards, along with the potential to apply the standard to mobile devices and web-based applications. This release, in particular, is important because the base platform of the standard has passed a normative ballot, meaning future changes to the standard’s normative parts will be backward compatible. Thus, applications implementing R4 normative parts will no longer risk being nonconformant.

Corepoint Health has included the FHIR standard in Corepoint Integration Engine since early 2016, with support for release 2 of HL7 FHIR, and then followed with support for release 3. Additionally, Corepoint Health participates in HL7 FHIR Connectathons, as well as the IHE USA Connectathon (which now has many profiles based on the HL7 FHIR standard).

Corepoint Health’s founder, President and CTO, Dave Shaver is the Co-Chair of the HL7 FHIR Governance Board, and the organization has a strong commitment to support all releases of HL7 FHIR in the product, as well as the community to enhance the FHIR Standard.
